Jack D. Webb

ENID — Funeral service for Jack D. Webb, 87, of Enid, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Christ United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bill Stephens, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Jim Jones, Christ United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army.

He was born July 21, 1925, in Galena, Kan., to William Roy and Tressa Downing Webb.

He graduated from Galena High School and served in the Marines during WWII, and was a China Marine. He served in the Asiatic Pacific area, the Borneo Operation, and the Okinawa Operation.

Following his discharge, he played football at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and was known as “The Horse.” He graduated with a BS in education.

He met Gloria Fyler while there, and they were married in 1951.

They moved to Greeley, Colo., where he taught history at Greeley High School and earned his master of education from Colorado State College.

Then they moved to Wellington, Kan, where he coached high school sports before coming to Enid High School in 1955, where he taught American History and coached track and football. He was the assistant principal at Enid High School from 1957-1964. He was principal when the football team won three state football championships in a row, ’64-’65-’66. In 1965, he created the Pride of the Plainsmen Award.  

He was assistant superintendent of Enid Pubic Schools from 1967 to 1985, when he retired.

Gloria preceded him in death. In 1989, he married Gayle Wofford.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church; past president of Northern Oklahoma Education Association and State Athletic Association; and served on the executive board of North Central Association. The Department of Defense sent him to evaluate the schools on military bases overseas in Europe, for which he traveled to England, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Turkey; served on St. Mary’s hospital board; and was on the Enid Metropolitan Area Planning Commission for 15 years.

He was an accomplished wood and metal sculptor. One of his pieces is in the Nelson Rockefeller Art Collection, and the Eagle in the Enid News and Eagle lobby is his creation.

In 1985, he received the Pride of the Plainsmen Award. In 1998, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Education Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle of the home; son, David and wife Tracy and granddaughters, Lauren and Taylor of Tulsa; son, Dan and wife Melanie and grandsons, Matthew and Nathan, and granddaughter Ally of Broken Arrow; son, Kirby and wife Heidi and granddaughters, Emily and Natalie of Tulsa; stepdaughter, Gay and husband Mike Cocheres and grandson Trevor, and granddaughter Alli of Enid; stepson, Keith Wofford of McKinney, Texas; and stepdaughter, Kimberly Wofford of McKinney, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl; sisters-in-law, Charline and Marguerite; and brother-in-law, Carl Fyler.

Memorials in his memory may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Horn of Plenty, with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
