Published 5-11-14

CHEROKEE, OK — Robert “Bob” Eugene Wilson, 89, of Cherokee, Oklahoma, passed away in his home on May 7, 2014. He will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2014, at Lanman Funeral Home in Cherokee. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Cherokee. Interment will follow at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert was born Sept. 13, 1924, southeast of Helena, Oklahoma, on the homestead of Neva and Edgar Wilson. He attended first grade in Helena until the family moved to Cherokee, from which he graduated in 1942. Bob worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Jet, Perry and Enid. It was with this job that he met his wife.

He married Oneita Cobb in Cherokee on June 3, 1943, and they established their home and had one daughter, Roberta “Speed.” They were married 52 years until her death in 2006.

He was drafted by the U.S. Army in WWII in 1943 and shipped to the Philippine island of Luzon. He was discharged in 1945. Following his service, he worked with the ATSF Railroad at Salt Plains. He retired after 42 years from Alfalfa Electric Co-Op in 1987, where he served as a lineman and in the engineering department.

Bob was a Mason, member of the American Legion and the First Baptist Church of Cherokee. He was an active Shriner and helped organize the Shrine Circus for the Cherokee fourth-grade class each year, which they continue today. His greatest love was the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years. He made the trip to Philmont Scout Camp and two trips to Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base in Canada. He later made a rappelling trip to Colorado with the Explorer Post. He was also a member of the Order of Arrow through the Boy Scouts. He loved camping, fishing, watching his grand- and great-grandchildren during sports events and Scouting trips. He didn’t know a stranger and could carry on a conversation with anyone. He was best known for all his “handmade games” and pocket full of jokes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neva and Edgar; stepfather, Orville Simpson; wife, Oneita; and brother, Max.

Bob is survived by one daughter, Roberta; granddaughter, Jamie and husband, Justin; grandson, Jason and wife, Cassandra; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jalynn, Dalton, Kinzie, Chesney, and Lyndey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Make-a-Wish Oklahoma, 5201 N. Shartel Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73118.
