Dorotha Belle Keller Hoffman

Published 8-6-13

ENID, Okla. — Dorotha Belle Keller Hoffman, 89, died Aug. 1, 2013, at The Commons in Enid, Okla., from complications of congestive heart failure and non-smokers lung cancer.

Dorotha was born to Rena Belle Hood Naylor and Roy Elmer Naylor on Feb. 15, 1924, on a farm near Braman, Okla., the fourth of five siblings who all preceded her in death.

She played the violin and piano and played the bass drum in the band. She was a forward for the Braman High School basketball team that went to the state championship in 1941. Dorotha remained an avid basketball fan all of her life following the OKC Thunder and especially the OSU and OU women’s basketball teams.

She entered the government-sponsored Cadet Nurse Corps in the Wesley School of Nursing during WWII and graduated as a registered nurse in July, 1945. Her first husband, Rex Keller, proposed but would not marry her until she graduated. They married on Aug. 26, 1945, in South Haven, Kan.

Dorotha and Rex moved to Garber in March 1950, where they raised their four children, ran Rex’s Upholstery Shop, and farmed east of Garber.  Dorotha often served as a community volunteer nurse and helped with the public vaccination programs in the early 1960s. She returned to nursing full-time in 1970, working as the director of nursing at the Garber Nursing Home for seven years. Later, she worked as a nurse in the hospital unit of the Enid State School for 12 years until her retirement.

Dorotha was very active in the Garber United Methodist Church as a member of the choir, United Methodist Women, and administrative board. She taught Sunday school and was instrumental in organizing the Sonshine Kids Mothers’ Day Out program. Dorotha also enjoyed traveling, making several trips with Rex to Europe and Korea to visit their children. Later, Dorotha and Leon also enjoyed traveling and going to Canada on fishing trips.

Rex died May 2, 1986, and Dorotha married Leon Hoffman on August 8, 1987.
