Richard O. Welty

Published 7-21-13

ENID, OK — Richard O. Welty was born Feb. 18, 1925, in Enid, Okla., to Otto R. and Blanche Fern (Brentnall) Welty. He passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Bartlesville, Okla., at the age of 88 years and 5 months.

Richard (Dick) attended Sunnyside school in Hunter, Okla., a one-room, eight-grade, single-teacher rural school also attended years earlier by his father Otto. He graduated from Hunter High School in 1943, and was elected president of his class.

He considered himself very fortunate to be selected for the Navy V-12 program near the end of WWII, through which he attended the University of Texas and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He worked briefly for Douglas Aircraft in California, then returned to the University of Texas to earn a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

He became an instructor, then assistant professor in the ME department. There he met his future bride, Ann Page, who worked as a secretary to the dean of the College of Engineering. Richard and Ann married on March 24, 1951.

Richard joined Phillips Petroleum Company in 1955, and worked at the corporate research center in Bartlesville for more than 20 years before transferring to Applied Automation, a Phillips subsidiary in Bartlesville. He received numerous patents for inventions at Phillips and retired in 1985.

His lifelong interest in aviation led to a private pilot’s license, and he especially enjoyed long-distance motorcycle trips with his wife and water-skiing with his children.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Ramona B. Welty and Elaine Welty.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Welty of the home; sons, Richard (Rick) Welty and wife Yumiko of Boulder, Colo., and David Welty and wife Kimberly of Oakland, Calif.; his daughter, Laney Ketchum, granddaughter Kara Ketchum, and her father Dallas Ketchum, all of Durant, Okla.

The family will hold a graveside service at the Hunter, Okla., cemetery on Wednesday, July 24 at 11 a.m.
