ENID, Okla. — Funeral for Bessie Mildred Boland, 97, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Jefferson United Methodist Church, Jefferson, Okla. The Revs. Michelle McCarty and Gary Lilley will officiate. Burial will be in Hawley, Okla., Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.  Visitation with the family is 6-8 p.m. today, April 8, at the funeral home.

Bessie Boland was born Jan. 25, 1917, on a farm near Orlando, Okla., to John H. and Ida Mae (McClellan) Long and went to meet her Lord on Sunday, April 6, 2014, in Enid, Okla.

She grew up in the Orlando area, where she attended the Oak Point Rural Grade School and Orlando High School for her first two high school years. The family moved to the Jefferson area, where she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936.

She married Clarence Boland in Valley Center, Kan., on June 6, 1936. In 2013, they celebrated 77 years of marriage.

They farmed southwest of Medford and raised cattle, hogs, sheep and poultry. In 1980, they moved from the farm to Pond Creek, where they lived until moving to Enid in 2004.

She was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of and held various offices in the Jefferson United Methodist Women and the Jefferson Community Workers. She was an active member of the Nash and Pond Creek senior citizen groups. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, canning and baking, and was awarded numerous top prizes at the Grant County and Conservation Fairs because of her expertise in these activities.

She is survived by sons, Dan (Norma) of Bethany, Okla., A.C. (Nancy) of Pratt, Kan., and Jerry (Flora) of Enid, Okla., and daughter, Joyce McKerley (Ray) of Bixby, Okla. Additional survivors include nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four nieces and five nephews.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother, a stepsister, three stepbrothers, a granddaughter, an infant great-grandson and husband, Clarence, who passed away in December 2013.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Jefferson United Methodist Church.
