Vickie Lynn (Curtis) Hoskins

Published 3-31-13

ENID — Vickie Lynn (Curtis) Hoskins was born to LeRoy and Shirley (Tyree) Curtis on Oct. 4, 1948, in Oklahoma City.

Growing up in Canton, she graduated from Canton High School in 1966.

After graduation she attended SWOSU and married Earl Dean Hoskins on Aug. 27, 1967.

Vickie worked at the Social Security Office in Clinton from 1970-1972. In 1970, she gave birth to her first child, Curtis Dean. In 1972, they moved to Goodwell, Okla. She gave birth to her second son, Jeffrey Wayne in 1973. A few years following, she was asked to fill in as a high school music teacher for half of the year. That was when she fell in love with teaching. Vickie gave birth to her daughter, Rebecca Lynn, in 1978. With three children at home, she then went back to school at Panhandle State to start toward her education degree.

In 1983, Vickie moved back to her hometown of Canton, with her husband and three children.

Vickie graduated from SWOSU with a degree in education in 1986, with honors.

Following graduation, she worked at Delhi Gas Plant from 1988-1990. She started teaching English at Canton Public Schools in 1991. During that time she taught, inspired, mentored and loved many of her students. Vickie had a passion for teaching and took great pride in her students. In 1992, she began her co-sponsorship with the National Honor Society. Her passion for education continued when she took over the Academic Bowl Team in 1993. She had the opportunity to coach six Academic All-Staters. Her teams were state runner-up in 2003, 2004 and 2012. Vickie was so proud of the success the students achieved. In 2011, she retired from teaching, but continued coaching the academic team until 2012.

Vickie was a selfless loving wife, mother, friend and teacher to all who knew her. She loved everyone unconditionally and whole-heartedly — always putting the needs of everyone else in front of her own. If she was needed she was there, from keeping stats for her husband and daughter’s basketball teams, to Sunday school teacher, to staying late after school helping her students. She was the anchor of her family and mentor to many students. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and exemplified her devout Christian beliefs to others — for she was truly a godly woman. Her infectious smile and laugh will never be forgotten.

On March 28, 2013, Vickie left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior.

She is survived by her mother, Shirley Curtis; husband, Earl Dean Hoskins of Canton; sons, Curtis and Donna Hoskins of Watonga, Okla.; Jeff Hoskins of El Reno, Okla.; daughter, Rebecca and Mario Gonzalez of Fresno, Calif.; sister, Shirley Ann Canaday; and a host of relatives and friends.

Her father, LeRoy Curtis and grandparents preceded her in death.
