Teresa P. Wight

Published 2-6-11

ENID — Our family’s original “Okie from Muskogee” was born October 12, 1918, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA. Her parents were JJ and Catherine (Kearns) Powers, from Cleveland, Ohio, who moved to Oklahoma due to the oil boom of the day.

Teresa was the eighth of 10 children in a small, Irish-American family. A diminutive child, she was bright, starting school at age 4 and graduating from St. Joseph’s of Enid in 1934 at age 15. She graduated from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, in 1940 with a degree in art.

Teresa married an Enid native, Avery B. Wight, in August 1941, in Seattle, Washington, while World War II raged in Europe. Her adventurous spirit took her to Detroit, Michigan, where her son, Avery B. “Joe” Wight was born, and then to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Doc was stationed. Halfway through the war, Dad was stationed as a health officer in Central America. A daughter, her third child, was born in Guatemala City in 1945.

Mom and Dad returned to Enid, in 1946, where Dr. Wight practiced medicine for 40 years, retiring in 1986. Mom was his receptionist and bookkeeper the last 10 years of his medical practice. In Enid, another six children were born to Teresa and Avery Wight, bringing the total to nine, with five boys and four girls. One daughter, Margaret Teresa, died in infancy.

Mom continued her art by using her children as her canvas, encouraging her offspring to pursue music lessons, sports and Scouting. All children attended parochial school in Enid as long as St. Joseph’s remained open. Mom and Dad continued their generosity, sending us all to college. The results: All graduated from college. There are two doctors, two MBA’s, two social workers and one very tired mother.

Mom was a competitive bridge player, golfed into her late 70’s, did the crossword in ink, and drove her own car until she was 90, when we all cried, “Stop!” She also learned to hunt and fish, so that with our Dad she could fulfill the biblical injunction, “Wither thou goest, I will go.” Teresa, the frail and small child, proved to be the strongest of the lot, outliving her nine brothers and sisters. Mom, we love you.

Survived by: Jim, and his wife, Anna Marie of Ada, OK;  Mary Anne and husband, Bob McCaffree, of Oklahoma City; Richard M. Wight, of Samos, Greece; Chuck, and wife Shira, of Novato, California; John, and wife, Beth, of Edmond, OK; Martha Wight, of the home; Cecelia Wight, of Oklahoma City. Twelve grandchildren: Rachel Stephens, Karen Wight-Greenberg, Renee Frenier, Avery Wight, Amy Hinkle, Sara McCaffree, Matt McCaffree, Tom Wight, Sam Wight, Julianna Wight, Siobhan Post, and Gavin Smith. There are 8 great-grandchildren.

A special thanks to Dr. Shook and the Centennial Hospice nurses. A lifetime achievement award and honorary sainthood goes to Martha Wight, our sister, whose selfless dedication to, first, her brother Joe, and then to our mother these past two years have been a source of endless amazement and gratitude by the rest of the family. Thanks, sis!

A wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2011, at Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
