Mary Floydene Slaughter Pollard Huffman

Published 8-1-13

ENID, Okla. — Mary Floydene Slaughter Pollard Huffman passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at her home in Edmond, Okla. She was born to Don and Marjorie Slaughter on Jan. 4, 1932, in Tucson, Ariz.

Mary was raised on a farm near Wakita, Okla., and later moved to a farm near Hawley, Okla., where she attended Gore Consolidated schools and Bethel Hawley Baptist Church. After graduating as salutatorian, she attended Oklahoma A&M.

She returned home after her freshman year and became deputy court clerk in Medford, Okla., where she met Grant County Judge, the honorable John Lewis Pollard. They were married March 6, 1952. To this union were born three children, John David Pollard, Robert Kent Pollard, and Lisa Ann (Pollard) Truesdell.

While living in Medford, she faithfully attended Medford First Baptist Church and worked as a tag agent in town. Mary lovingly cared for her husband, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma until he passed in 1966.

In 1968, she married Medford High School teacher and football coach, Dale Dwight Huffman and welcomed his two children, Deborah Dale (Huffman) Kane and William Dodd Huffman. In 1970, Mary and Dwight welcomed twins Eric Dwight Huffman and Heidi Lee (Huffman) Brewer to complete their family.

Mary and Dwight moved to White Deer, Texas, in 1975. In White Deer, Mary and Dwight were members of White Deer First Baptist Church, where Mary taught 5th grade girls Sunday school for years.

Mary was a bank clerk in White Deer and she became a Mary Kay beauty consultant, which she continued for the rest of her life.

When Dwight retired from the White Deer School System in 1994, they moved to Edmond, Okla. Shortly after their move, Dwight was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Mary, again, lovingly cared for her husband until his death in 1996.

In Edmond, Mary was an active member of Henderson Hills Baptist Church, where she helped facilitate the Grief-Share Program and was a member of Bible study fellowship. In 2008, Mary began attending First Baptist Church of Edmond with her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Larry Truesdell. Mary was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Marjorie Slaughter; her first husband, John Pollard; her second husband, Dwight Huffman; brother, Kenneth Herrman; and son, Bill Huffman.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Gene Warnock; son, Robert Pollard and wife Judi; son, John Pollard and wife Annette; daughter, Lisa Truesdell and husband Larry; daughter, Debby Kane and husband Tom; son, Eric Huffman and wife Kara; and daughter, Heidi Brewer and husband Michael. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Trey Truesdell, Aubree Day, Chelsee Pease, Will Pollard, Jay Jay Pollard, Matthew Kane, Michael Kane, Jackson Huffman, Gavin Huffman, Abigail Brewer and Mason Brewer; and great-grandson, Sawyer Truesdell.
