ENID, OK — Funeral for Ruth Wiles Freeman, 85, of Enid, Okla., will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at Central Christian Church. The Rev. John P. McLemore will officiate.

Burial will follow in Pawnee Cemetery, Pawnee, Okla., under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

A visitation will be 6-7:30 p.m. today, Jan. 5, 2014, at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 23, 1928, to Carl and Maude Adams Wiles in Pawnee, Okla., and passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.

She lived in Pawnee until the sixth grade, then moved to Enid, where she graduated from Enid High School in 1946. After attending Monticello Girls School, she then graduated from Stanford University in 1951, where she met her first husband, Woody Howle. They lived in Dallas from 1957-1976, where she raised her four children and taught grade school.

She married Boyd Freeman on Aug. 20, 1976, in Dallas. They made their home in Enid, where she also raised two stepchildren.

She was on the library board, a Friends of the Library member and a member of P.E.O. Chapter Q. She was very supportive of all kinds of historical preservation and history. She was responsible for identifying the Enid Land Run Office and helped secure it for Humphrey Heritage Village, which she was also an active member. Additionally, she received a distinguished service award for the preservation of state and local history from the Oklahoma Heritage Association and was involved with The Keeper of the Plains award.  

She loved her family, friends, playing bridge, Weimaraner dogs, sewing, quilts and making teddy bears. She was an excellent cook and the world’s greatest mom.

She is survived by her husband, Boyd of the home; three sons, Jeff P. Howle and Steve Howle of Dallas and Jim Howle of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; daughter, Julie Howle; two stepchildren, Ruth Freeman of Oakland, Calif., and Robert Freeman of Las Vegas, Nev.; and grandchildren, Natalie Howle, Wes Howle, Doug Howle, Alaina Howle and Ray Knight.  

She was preceded in death by an infant brother and one granddaughter, Chezley Howle.

Memorials can be made to Museum of the Cherokee Strip or Michael J. Fox Foundation, with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
