Memorial service for Viola May Hughes Hilbig, 97, of Alva, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008 at First United Methodist Church, Freedom. The Revs. Woody Hamon, Mark Kinkle and Bobbie Gainer will officiate. A private family burial will be held prior to the service. Arrangements are by Billings Funeral Home, Woodward.
She was born Oct. 25, 1910 in Aline to Charles Evart and Enola Anna Walker Hughes and died Monday, July 21, 2008 at Share Medical Center, Alva.
She was raised in Yewed and Freedom. She attended West Union Country School and Freedom Schools, graduating from Freedom High School in 1928. She attended Oklahoma A&M and received her teaching certificate from Alva Normal School. She taught at West Union School.
She married Harold Edward Hilbig May 13, 1934 south of Freedom. They made their home in Harper County later moving to the Freedom area where they farmed. He died Feb. 12, 1983. She moved into Freedom in 1984. She was a member of Freedom United Methodist Church and hosted Bible studies from her home.
Surviving are three sons, Richard Hilbig of Enid, Ronald Hilbig of Booker, Texas, and Donald Hilbig of Santa Maria, Calif.; two daughters, Anna Lee Murray and Lois Ferguson, both of Freedom; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, Harold, she was preceded in death by one daughter and three brothers.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Freedom United Methodist Church or Freedom First Christian Church.
