Elta Gene Sions Pierce

The funeral for Elta Gene Sions Pierce, 84, of Leedey, will be 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Leedey. Burial will be 3 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid. Arrangements are by Shaw Funeral Home, Leedey.

She was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Oakwood to Charles Earl and Mary “Marie” Wadsworth Sions and died Friday, May 2, 2008, at OU Medical Center Presbyterian Hospital, Oklahoma City.

She attended Oakwood Public Schools. In 1935, her parents purchased the drug store in Cleo Springs, where she attended Cleo Springs Public Schools. She married Oscar William Pierce Jan. 14, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. They lived in several places while he was in the service. She attended Southwestern State College School of Pharmacy and earned a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy in 1945. She also attended Phillips University and received her elementary teaching certificate. She taught third and fourth grade in Cleo Springs and sixth grade and science at Cleveland Elementary, Enid. They purchased the Leedey Drug Store in 1964, where she was the pharmacist. He preceded her in death. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, being a past matron of both Cleo Springs and Leedey Chapters, and received her 50-year pin in 1992. She was recognized by Oklahoma Pharmaceutical Association in 1995 for 50 years as a registered pharmacist. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Cleo Springs Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church, Leedey.

Surviving are three children, Richard Pierce of Leedey, Robert Pierce of Enid and Janet Cunningham of Yorktown, Va; and six grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Oscar, she was preceded in death by one daughter.
