The funeral services for Catherine J. Walters, 91-year-old Enid resident, will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at Henninger-Allen Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Susan Southall will officiate. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Fountain Cemetery, Canton.
Catherine was born Dec. 16, 1916, on a farm near Canton, OK to Simpson and Alice (Bell) Nickell and died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Highland Park Manor.
She attended school at Con Six until 1932. During an extended illness she lived with her sister, Clara Linder, in Augusta, KS. She returned to Canton, OK to marry Seth Walters on April 3, 1935. They had two sons, Forrest Walters of Fort Collins, CO and Larry Walters of Edmond, OK.
After the death of her husband, Seth, in 1948, she continued to operate their farm near Seiling, OK. She was one of the pioneering women farm managers, a job she took on with determination and tireless persistence. At the same time she finished her high school degree through a correspondence program and completed a nursing aide and training program. She was proud of the Soil Conservation Award she received in 1968 because it recognized her stewardship of the land. In addition, she was active in the Seiling Eastern Star organization and First United Methodist Church. After completing the nurses aide training program she worked at the Seiling Nursing Home.
Due to injuries from a farm-related accident, she moved fulltime to Enid, OK. In 2004, she moved to the Greenbrier Residential Living where she lived until 2008.
She is survived by her two sons and their families, Forrest and Kay Walters and their sons Brian and Mark Walters, and Larry and Janice Walters and their children, Sherri Ward, Chris Walters and Julie Shriver. She leaves her brother and his family, Woodrow and Imogene Nickell and their daughter, Linda Nickell. She will be missed by her five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Anna Brown, Clara Linder, Linnie Hayes and Nemmie Blanka.
