An abandoned building was destroyed by fire late Monday, and authorities believe vagrant activity caused the fire.
Fire Marshal Ken Helms said the fire at 11:59 p.m. at 1028 N. 5th was in a vacant shack that may have once been used as a storage building. There are no plumbing fixtures attached to the house, he said, and it is uncertain if it was ever used as a residence.
“The fire started due to some type of vagrant activity, that was the cause,” Helms said.
There was no extensive damage. The fire burned through the floor and got underneath the building, but was extinguished by firefighters.
