Man stuck on elevator during power outage

ENID, Okla. — An Enid man found himself stuck in an elevator Sunday afternoon when the power went out.

Doug Arnold, maintenance man for Broadway Tower, was in the elevator in the basement when the lights went off and the elevator would not work. Arnold called Enid Fire Department, and firefighters arrived and removed him from the elevator.

Firefighters received the call at 1:19 p.m. and left the scene 10 minutes later, according to an EFD report.

“It couldn’t have been better for us. He was stuck in the basement, and we talked to him through the door, and he told us where the elevator key was and we got him out,” said Fire Capt. James Milacek.

Arnold remained calm throughout the incident, firefighters said.

John Little, regional manager of OG&E Electric Services, said the outage occurred at about 1 p.m., when a squirrel got into a substation. About 1,500 people in Enid lost power for about one hour. Electricity began to come back on at about 2 p.m. Little said OG&E crews transferred the load to another circuit and cleaned up after the squirrel, which died.
