Fatal house fire

JET — JET — Authorities are continuing their investigation into a house fire that killed two people Monday night in Jet.

The blaze killed Marchaleen Radig, 48, and Gabriel Luna, 7, according to Alfalfa County Sheriff Charlie Tucker.

Three other people were injured, including Radig’s husband, Donald, and her son, Austin Newman, 22, as well as a neighbor, Tucker said.

The neighbor remained hospitalized Tuesday in St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid. Tucker did not have the man’s name or his condition.

Tucker said Newman and the neighbor suffered from smoke inhalation. Donald Radig, 54, suffered a cut, Tucker said.

He said the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s Office has not determined a cause of the fire. Donald Radig told authorities the fire started in the back of the house, Tucker said.

The fire was reported at 11:38 p.m. Monday

According to Tucker, Donald Radig and his wife were awakened by the fire. Luna was sleeping on a pallet in the room. They could not go out of their bedroom because of the fire, so Donald Radig kicked the air conditioner out of the window and jumped to the ground approximately 6 feet, Tucker said.

When he noticed his wife had not followed him, he used a ladder to climb back up but was unable to get back into the bedroom, Tucker said. Newman, who was sleeping in a tent in the yard, tried to get in the house and also was unsuccessful, he said. A neighbor then tried to enter the house and could not.

Fire departments from Jet, Nescatunga, Goltry and Nash battled the fire, which burned through the night, Tucker said.
