Pinatas and snow cones

— Students at Adams Elementary School had an end-of-school snow cone party on the blacktop Thursday afternoon.

The kindergarten, first-, second- and third-graders enjoyed a pinata smash as well. The pinata smash was the year-end fun event for them because the older grades got to make a trip to the planetarium last week.

About 130 students in kindergarten and first grade were the first group on the blacktop.

The kids sat down to eat their cherry or grape snow cones before the pinata party got started. Then, they were called over to sit in a circle around the star-shaped pinata.

One after another, the students put on an oversized Dr. Seuss “Cat in the Hat” red and white striped hat and were spun around before stepping forward to whack the pinata.

One girl managed to knock loose an arm of the star, but still the pinata refused to give up its booty.

Then, teacher Brandy Fincher took a turn and gave the pinata a few hard whacks with the stick. Fincher broke a hole in the pinata, and she and Principal Beverly James reached inside to grab handfuls of the candy and toss them to the eager children as they scrambled to pick up pieces of candy from the blacktop.
