A county fair read

ENID, Okla. — While pie bakers waited for the pie contest judge to appear at Garfield County Fair, groups of children gathered nearby to hear books read.

Jerred Unruh, youth pastor at Enid Mennonite Brethren Church, held 10 preschoolers spellbound as he read “The Jesus Story Book Bible” to them.

As soon as that reading was through, 26 kindergarten students from Kremlin-Hillsdale Elementary School gathered around Unruh’s feet.

The reading sessions are part of the Garfield County Extension Service’s literacy project.

Beverly Buller, literacy chair for the extension office, said readers volunteer on Thursday and Friday of fair week.

“The schools call in and reserve time slots,” Buller said. “We’re just promoting literacy and the love of reading.”
