OSI: ‘Eyes of the Eagle’

ENID, Okla. — The Air Force Office of Special Investigations has a simple, inspirational motto — “Eyes of the Eagle.”

But those eyes cannot be everywhere and see everything, which is where the Eagle Eyes program comes in.

Eagle Eyes is an anti-terrorism initiative that seeks the help of Air Force members and civilians in the war on terror.

“This is aimed at not just active-duty military, but the local community,” said OSI special Agent Jason J.K. Akana, who is a member of Detachment 438 at Vance Air Force Base.

Eagle Eyes asks everyone to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviors in which terrorists typically engage while planning attacks.

These behaviors include surveillance, elicitation of information, tests of security, acquiring supplies, suspicious people who are out of place, someone conducting a dry run of a potential terrorist act and deploying assets in advance of some sort of attack.

And these suspicious activities don’t have to only involve the Air Force and Vance.

“We’re not here just to protect the Air Force but the local community around it,” Akana said. “We’re here for everybody.

“If something affects the base, it’s just as likely to affect the local community. We want to let everybody know that we’re here for everybody’s safety.”

If anyone sees or hears anything that seems suspicious, something that just doesn’t feel right, some sort of activity that seems out of place, they are asked to call 213-7415, which is the 71st Security Forces Squadron number. The 71st SFS will, in turn, contact the OSI agent on call.

“If you feel something is suspicious, call us, we’ll sort out whether or not it is,” Akana said. “The biggest challenge we face is having people actually call and report, so the more people who know about us and the more people who are aware of this program and other programs like it, the better.

“If we can get the reports, we can do our job and stop any threats.”
