Preparedness event is Saturday at Oakwood Mall

ENID, Okla. — A number of area agencies are expected to participate in increasing public awareness during the third annual Weather and Disaster Preparedness Day set for Saturday.

Mike Honigsberg, certified director of Enid and Garfield County Emergency Management, said the event — set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Mall — will give citizens the opportunity to visit with emergency responders, who will answer questions and provide information.

Organizations scheduled to appear at the event include the National Weather Service, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Enid Police Department, Enid Fire Department, rural fire departments, Air Evac out of Woodward and the American Red Cross. The Enid Amateur Radio Club also is expected to be on hand to program weather radios, Honigsberg said.

He said he expects officials from state emergency management as well as emergency managers from other counties to be in attendance.

Booths will be located around the mall’s food court and center court.

A meteorologist from the National Weather Service will hold a spotter class at 1 p.m.

“We encourage anybody that’s interested in weather that wants to understand dynamics of storms and what actually goes on, they’re more than welcome to sit in on that class,” Honigsberg said.

Beginning at noon, four NOAA Weather Radios will be given away each hour. Honigsberg said those vying for a weather radio need to arrive about 20 minutes before the hour to obtain tickets. Tickets will be given away each hour for the drawings, he said.

Emergency vehicles will be on display 1-3 p.m. outside the mall.

“People can come by and look at them real close, talk to the people that actually run them,” Honigsberg said.
