ENID, Okla. —
Elementary boys from schools across Enid will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Thursday at Symphony Hall.
The annual “Real Men Sing” concert is directed by John Stam. Accompanist will be Marsha Lines. “Real Men Sing” has been an annual event since 2008.
Eddie Lou Strimple, elementary music consultant for Enid Public Schools and music teacher at McKinley, said 104 boys will perform at this year’s concert.
“That’s a lot of boys in one room,” Strimple said.
The program for this year’s concert includes “Exsultate Justi,” by Rollo Dilworth; “Bashana Haba’ah,” by Ehud Manor and Nurit Hirsch; “The Rock Island Line,” by Janet Klevberg Day; “Dona, Dona,” by Sheldon Secunda; and “Chumbara,” by Dave and Jean Perry.
Enid Arts Council provides funding for the annual concert.
“We also have a program called Real Men Sing Team Builders, in which donors can achieve ‘home run’ status or ‘MVP’ by donating to this project,” said Eddie Strimple, McKinley Elementary music teacher and coordinator of Real Men Sing.
Strimple said much of the practice for the concert takes place at their home school before the entire group comes together for final practice that day.
“I hear every year from the elementary music teachers that this time they spend after school with their boys is one of the favorite and most rewarding things they do,” Strimple said. “When we are all together on our day, the rewards multiply. The smiles on the faces of the boys and the pride they are able to demonstrate in their performance is reason to believe in the future of our young people and of music.”
Elementary music teachers working with boys for the concert include Kathryn Dorton, Adams; Kathleen Crook, Coolidge; Nancy Dillard, Eisenhower; Julie Kimber, Garfield; Angela Pennello, Glenwood; Mary Dikes, Hayes; Martha O’Banion, Hoover; Sonja Jackson, Monroe; Briana Bull, Prairie View; and Diane Schenk, Taft.
There is no admission fee.
