EPS special services director to be honored

ENID, Okla. — David McCune, Enid Public Schools director of special services, will be honored June 6 with a statewide award from the Oklahoma Directors of Special Services.

McCune, who has been in his role 20 years, has been named 2013 Director of the Year.

Amber Fitzgerald, human resources and communications director for EPS, said McCune has been instrumental in expanding high quality programming and placement options for students with disabilities, developing community partnerships, and supporting students, families and colleagues.

“David epitomizes what an outstanding special services director should be,” said Shawn Hime, superintendent for EPS. “He is knowledgeable and caring, and every decision that he makes is driven by what is in the best interest of children. He builds relationships with families, with teachers and with students to ensure they are receiving the best education to fit their individual needs.”

McCune has worked for EPS since 1982, when he started duties as a school counselor. In 1990, McCune became principal of Eisenhower Elementary School. In 1993, he was named director of special services for the district.

McCune is past president of ODSS. According to organization officials, he is well respected by his fellow directors for his calm, patient demeanor, willingness to help his peers, and ongoing participation in collaborative efforts to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.

McCune will be recognized at the ODSS awards luncheon on June 6, during the annual Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration summer conference in Norman.

ODSS is one of six groups of school administrators under the CCOSA umbrella. CCOSA is an incorporated non-profit organization serving more than 2,800 superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals, special education directors, and other central office administrators.
