100 furloughed Vance employees returning to work

ENID, Okla. — In the wake of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s weekend recall of most civilian workers furloughed by the government shutdown, all 100 employees furloughed at Vance Air Force Base have been notified to return to work, a spokesman in the Vance Public Affairs office said Monday.

One hundred of the 246 government civilians employed at Vance were furloughed as the result of the government shutdown that began Oct. 1.

Saturday, Hagel announced he was recalling most of the furloughed Department of Defense civilians.

Hagel said the department has tried to “exempt as many DOD civilian personnel as possible” from furloughs, and will continue to try to bring all civilian employees back to work as soon as possible.

“Ultimately, the surest way to end these damaging and irresponsible furloughs, and to enable us to fulfill our mission as a department, is for Congress to pass a budget and restore funds for the entire federal government,” Hagel said.

As a result of Hagels actions the Vance commissary, closed since the shutdown, will reopen.

In all, nearly 104,000 Air Force civilians were furloughed.
