Mocha is grand: Dachshund qualifies for September national races in Ohio

ENID, Okla. — A 5-year-old Dachshund named Mocha took home the grand championship at this year’s Paws 4 the Cause Dachshund Dash.

Mocha and her owner, Gwen Hunt, traveled to Enid from Lawton to compete in the fourth annual event. They now qualify to compete at the National Dachshund Foundation races held in September in Findlay, Ohio.

“We’re going,” Hunt said about the competition. “We are definetely going.”

Hunt, originally from Kansas, said Mocha had participated in races when she was 2 and 3, and remained undefeated in the Sunflower State until they moved to Oklahoma a year ago. Hunt said she couldn’t find any dachshund races for Mocha to compete in last year, and when she learned of the Paws 4 the Cause races on Facebook, she knew they’d have to compete.

“It’s a great race,” she said, holding her championship dachshund and grand championship trophy in both arms. “They’ve just done a fantastic job, with all of the volunteers and sponsors.”

Hunt said she’s taken Mocha to a lot of races, maybe six or seven a year when Mocha was 2 and 3 years old.

“This is our first race in Oklahoma, and she’s still undefeated,” Hunt said. She said ever since Mocha was a puppy she and her husband would take the dog into the backyard and play a “catch and release” game with her running between the two.

“We didn’t know we were training her at the time,” Hunt said.

The secret to the pair’s success is simple — it’s love.

“She loves me more than anything else on earth,” Hunt said of Mocha. “She doesn’t know she’s racing, she’s just trying to beat the other dogs getting to me first. She never leaves my side.”

As well as the races, this year’s Paws 4 the Cause Dachshund Dash features a special retirement ceremony for Enid Police Department dog Thor.

The proceeds from this year’s race will help the department purchase a new dog in the fall.

This year’s Dachshund Dash was presented by Park Avenue Thrift, Security National Bank, Eagle Marketing and Chisholm Trail Expo Center.
