Heritage Village to host 2 events at Turkey Creek School

Enid News and Eagle

ENID, Okla. — Families have the opportunity to spend an afternoon at Turkey Creek School on May 18 making crafts with the schoolmarm and playing historic games.

The special living history activities will be 1-3 p.m. at the school in Humphrey Heritage Village. One Saturday a month, Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center hosts living history activities.

The event offers a fun way to learn the history of the region and develop a deeper appreciation for why and how tasks were accomplished in the early pioneering days of the Cherokee Strip. Spending time at Turkey Creek School allows kids to experience a typical school day in 1910.

Kids’ admission price of $3 will be good for everyone during the special event.

For information on Family Saturday activities or other Heritage Center programs, call 237-1907 or go to www.csrhc.org. Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is located at 507 S. 4th.

Students grades 3-5 welcomed on May 24

The doors of Turkey Creek School will open to all students in third through fifth grades May 24.

The school day begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., following a tour of Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. The fee is $5 per student, and class photographs are available for $7.

Students will be greeted by the schoolmarm, who will take them through their daily studies of reading, writing and ciphering, as it would have been taught in the Cherokee Outlet in 1910. Each student will have a slate, chalk, ink and nib pen to work with during their visit to Turkey Creek School.

Students are encouraged to wear period clothing and bring their lunch pails filled with a typical 1910 Oklahoma lunch. After lunch, students will play on the Humphrey Heritage Village grounds, enjoying games such as drop the handkerchief and red rover.
