Enid News & Eagle staff takes General Excellence first place in AP-ONE contest

NORMAN, Okla. — The Oklahoman, the Enid News & Eagle and the Tahlequah Daily Press won top awards Saturday in the Associated Press/Oklahoma News Executives competition.

In addition, News & Eagle photographer Bonnie Vculek won the AP sweepstakes award for her sports photos.

In all, the News & Eagle and its staff won eight individual first place awards.

Each newspaper finished first among newspapers of similar size in the contest’s general excellence category. The Oklahoman won among the contest’s largest participants; the Enid News & Eagle won among medium-size newspapers; and the Tahlequah Daily Press won among the smaller newspapers.

The newspapers were judged based on total content over a period of three consecutive days selected at random during calendar year 2012.

The winners were announced Saturday night in Norman.

The AP/Oklahoma News Executives competition is open to newspapers that are regular members of The Associated Press news cooperative. The competition attracted more than 600 entries across 20 writing and photography categories.

In the general excellence category of medium-size newspapers, the News & Eagle staff took first place over the Muskogee Daily Phoenix and the Norman Transcript.

Enid News & Eagle placings in the Associated Press contest Division B included:

• Public Service Reporting, first place, James Neal and Cass Rains, closed judicial records.

• Business Spot News Reporting, first place, Robert Barron, Oakwood “de-malling.”

• Spot Sports News Reporting, first place, Ryan Costello, “Chelf loss hurts.”

• Feature, second place, Phyllis Zorn, “Remembering the movement.”

• Sports Columns, first place, Dave Ruthenberg.

• Non-Page One Layout, first place, Joe Malan.

• Headlines, second place, David Christy.

• Website, second place, Violet Hassler.

• General Excellence, first place, Enid News & Eagle staff.

• Sports Photo, first place, Bonnie Vculek, Connie Mack State Tournament; third place, Billy Hefton, “Dandy Dahl.”

• General News Photo, second place, Billy Hefton, “That wasn’t the man I married,” and third place, Billy Hefton, “Taking on challenges.”

• Feature Photo, third place, Billy Hefton, “Back-to-school cuts.”

• Photo Package, first place, Billy Hefton, “Heroes remembered,” and second place, Billy Hefton, “Prep basketball.”
