Parents line up early for Chisholm pre-kindergarten enrollment

ENID, Okla. — Tuesday night was a long and cold night for nearly 30 parents waiting outside Chisholm Elementary School to enroll their 4-year-olds in pre-kindergarten.

Chisholm pre-kindergarten is on a first-come, first-served basis and accepts 40 students. Principal Darla Smith got her first inkling parents were outside the school when her phone rang Tuesday night.

“I got a phone call at 9:30 last night from the Chisholm police,” Smith said Wednesday morning. “They were already waiting and the police wanted to know if it was OK for them to kind of camp.”

Cory “Woody” Wood arrived at the grade school at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday to enroll his daughter, Nevaeh. Seeing that others already were there, he called his friend Terry Venable, who needed to enroll his son, Jerry.

Jared Brush, eager to enroll his son, Jack, arrived at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

None of the three dads got much sleep and all were tired Wednesday.

Two mothers, Stephanie Cantrell and Crystal Hughes, had a better plan than the dads had. Cantrell brought reclining lawn chairs for both and a warm comforter for herself.

“They just laid it back and rocked through the night,” Wood said. “It was like they were at the Hilton and we were at the Holiday Inn.”

Cantrell, there to enroll Annabelle, said she bundled up and slept well. Hughes, however, didn’t bring a warm enough blanket.

“I did not sleep,” Hughes said.

Hopefully, getting her daughter Khloe enrolled for pre-kindergarten was worth the night of lost sleep.

Smith said lines were long last year as well.

“We’ve always been a half-day pre-kindergarten, and we went full-day last year,” Smith said. “That increased the popularity.”

Smith said adding another pre-kindergarten class would mean adding another teacher and putting the littlest students in a portable classroom.

Outside the building, parents had a long wait in Tuesday’s intermittent rain. Pre-kindergarten enrollment was scheduled for 4-6 p.m. and kindergarten enrollment was 5:30-6 p.m. Wednesday.
