Glenwood Elementary School holds day-long safety event

ENID, Okla. — Students at Glenwood Elementary School should be safer after Friday’s special lessons at their school.

Visitors to school taught second- to fifth-graders about a wide range of hazards and how to safely navigate through them. The day-long safety education event at Glenwood is part of Progressive Ag Safety Day, a nationwide initiative to reduce injuries. The classes, and the groups who presented them, included:

• Lawn care equipment safety, P&K Equipment.

• Railroad safety, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

• Weather Safety — Garfield County Emergency Management.

• Smoke house, Enid Fire Department.

• Water safety, Denny Price Family YMCA.

• Hearing and smoking safety, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.

• Electrical and utility safety, OG&E and Oklahoma One Call.

• Bicycle safety, Oklahoma Farm Bureau.

• Bus safety, State Department of Education.

• First aid and summer safety, Cimarron Valley Chapter of American Red Cross.

• Nutrition and food safety, Extension.

• Oilfield safety — Farm and Home Safety.

• All-terrain vehicle safety, Oklahoma 4-H program.

Kevin Hackett, a retired extension educator, said volunteers have presented Ag Safety Day for about 12 years in Garfield County.

In past years, the event was held on a Saturday, but more recently, presenters have gone to various schools around the county.

“This is our first time at Enid Public Schools,” Hackett said of the event at Glenwood.

Students got a T-shirt and a bag of safety information and personal protective equipment to take home and educate their families on safety.
