Enid News & Eagle wins Sequoyah Award

ENID, Okla. — The Enid News & Eagle was judged the best newspaper in its class Friday during Oklahoma Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest awards ceremony.

The News & Eagle received the Sequoyah Award in Division I, the largest class for daily newspapers with circulations of more than 8,000.

“The News & Eagle staff works hard every day to make the best newspaper possible,” said Publisher Jeff Funk. This is a wonderful recognition of those daily efforts.”

This is the third year in a row the News & Eagle has won the Sequoyah Award, and the eighth time since 1997.

“Congrats to our excellent staff on this outstanding honor,” said Executive Editor Rob Collins. “It was a great team effort.”

The Sequoyah Award is determined by the amount of points accumulated in the contest’s 12 events: news content, layout and design, advertising, sales promotion, in-depth enterprise, editorial comment, personal columns, news writing, feature writing, sports coverage, photography and community leadership.

The News & Eagle received 1,010 points to outdistance the Norman Transcript, which received 880 points.

The News & Eagle won five of the 12 categories: news content, layout and design, in-depth enterprise, personal columns and community leadership.

The newspaper also placed second in six categories: advertising, sales promotion, editorial comment, news writing, sports coverage and photography. The News & Eagle also placed fourth in feature writing.

“Winning five of the 12 categories and placing second in six others is impressive,” said Associate Editor Kevin Hassler. “To place in every category in the OPA contest is almost unheard of. The overall results show how hard our staff works to give our readers the best product possible every day.”

Members of the South Dakota Newspaper Association judged the Oklahoma contest. The awards banquet was held at the Reed Center in Midwest City.
