ENID — OU football player and Enid native Austin Box has died after being found unresponsive in El Reno today.
Cherokee Ballard, public information officer for the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office confirmed his death.
According to an El Reno Police Department press release, Box was found unreponsive at 1219 S. Reno in El Reno.
A spokeswoman at Mercy Hospital in El Reno confirmed Box, 22, was admitted to the hospital then transferred to Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City.
El Reno police are continuing their investigation.
The Box family released a statement through Mercy Health Center this afternoon: "The Box family wishes to express their appreciation for the outpouring of sympathy from across the state. We particularly want to thank the University of Oklahoma, the coaching staff and players for their kindness and support.
"Austin loved everything about Oklahoma – the people, his hometown of Enid and his many close friends. Most of all, Austin loved his family and we loved him. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life."
