ENID, Okla. —
JP Custom Smoke took home the Grand Champion prize at the 8th annual Roberts Ranch Smokin’ Red Dirt BBQ.
“Good,” said a smiling John Patty when he described how it felt to take home the trophy above 65 other teams. “I’ve been doing this against these guys for nine years. Oklahoma has some of the best cooks, and to come here and win against them is a big deal.”
Hailing from Wichita, Kan., Patty said a victory at the Roberts Ranch Smokin’ Red Dirt BBQ is a huge win for him.
“That’s pretty much my best GC out of nine years of cooking,” he said.
Patty competed in the categories of pork, chicken, ribs and brisket. He also took home 10th place in chicken, seventh place in ribs, first place in pork and eight place in brisket.
He said in years past he’d taken home awards in different categories, but never as high an honor as Grand Champion.
Patty and his wife, Tina, began cooking about nine years ago, he said, and the couple try to hit 25 to 30 competitions each year.
“We use all of our vacation time for barbecue contests,” he said. “I know that sounds crazy.”
Patty builds custom smokers, tailgating grills and dollies for moving smokers. He also has three different rubs on the market.
He encouraged more cooks to come out and compete and his advice for younger cooks was this: “Jump in, the water is warm.”
“Most are pretty scared or intimidated,” he said of new cooks. “You can come out and ask for a baseline recipe, how much time and what temp, and as long as it’s not turn-in time, I know I’ll give it to you and I know these guys around here will.
“If we don’t have any new cooks, we wouldn’t have a sport,” he said.
