EHS academic team preparing for tourney

ENID, Okla. — Enid High School’s academic team is preparing to take on all challengers at the 6A state tournament Wednesday in El Reno.

The team qualified by sweeping Tulsa Washington High School’s academic team at the area tournament in Stillwater last month. Going two rounds against Washington, Enid prevailed with scores of 270-210 and 300-220. Washington has won the state championship 16 times in the past 18 years.

Seniors Jeffrey McNaughton, Sam Smoker, Zach Gwin and Shelby Snapp competed at regional.

Enid also plans to head to Chicago to compete in the National Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament, slated for May 31-June 1. This is the second-consecutive year EHS has qualified to compete at nationals.

This year, the team qualified for the national competition by placing second at the Cougar Invitational at Redlands Community College. Enid made it to the finals and lost to Edmond Memorial.

“The team had to compete with only three players instead of the usual four because of scheduling conflicts,” coach John Crockett said.

Seniors Sam Smoker and Zach Gwin, and junior Connor Angleton competed at the Cougar Invitational.
