ENID, Okla. — The Rev. Jerry Galbreath is conducting Church University, a community education program at University Place Christian Church, starting Sunday.

The fall semester offering is “Israel in the Land of Palestine.”

Galbreath, a former world religions instructor at Northern Oklahoma College, along with his wife, Annie, recently completed a trip to Israel and Palestine and will discuss their experiences. Classes are 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 7, 14, 21, and 28 at University Place Christian Church.

The retired pastor and his wife will lead the course, which will feature firsthand reports, videos made in Israel and Palestine, maps and history. Topics for the four sessions include a review of the history of the Israelites, Holy Land history of conquest and occupation, the Zionist movement, contemporary dynamics, including present-day personalities and peace movements, and the final session will include discussion of options for action, Galbreath said.

The Galbreaths were part of an “alternative” pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine early in 2012, and in June attended a national gathering in Washington, D.C., of church leaders working for peace in the Middle East.

While traveling in Palestine and Israel, the Galbreaths heard from Israeli Jews, Palestinian Christians and Palestinian Muslims. They spent time at all the acknowledged holy sites, in the West Bank and in a refugee camp.

Both Galbreaths are lifelong Christians and church leaders. Annie has served in national ecumenical leadership and congregational positions. Jerry has served in the Christian ministry for more than 40 years, including four years in a German church and teaching religion in community colleges for 14 years.

The United States has long-standing commitments to and with Israel. Christians from various persuasions, as well as other Abrahamic religions, have historical and emotional ties to the Holy Land. U.S. citizens need, therefore, to stay aware of what is happening in Israel and Palestine.

The program is open to the public. The enrollment fee is $20 for all four sessions, including materials. Enrollment begins at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Rebecca at University Place Christian Church at (580) 234-5221, or the Galbreaths at (580) 234-7252.
