‘Spirit of Enid’ to be displayed today

ENID, Okla. — Visit Enid will celebrate Oklahoma Statehood Day today, marking Oklahoma’s 106th anniversary of becoming a state.

A new piece of art, “Spirit of Enid,” by local artist Pam Gilbreath, will be on display 2-5 p.m. today at Enid Welcome Center, 201 W. Garriott.

Gilbreath’s work was inspired by Enid’s new brand identity. Featuring boundless, vibrant and original elements in a mixed media portrait, Gilbreath effectively captures the essence of Enid, said Marcy Jarrett, director of Visit Enid.

Gilbreath, who works as art teacher at Waller Middle School, said the Enid logo was the inspiration for the portrait.

“I loved the contrast of the black and white against a field of our blue skies. The words used to describe our town and its people — original, vibrant and boundless — provided me with the rest,” Gilbreath said. “I chose the vibrant yellows and golds of our canola fields to balance the cool colors of cobalt and ultramarine blues. To represent boundless, I extended the blue and white cloud/sky shape in the lower left area into the adjacent block, effectively breaking the border.

“I purposely chose this frameless canvas for the same reason. Adding the whimsical elements of the swirly lines, the polka dots and the checkerboard patterns is my way of balancing the neat, clean geometric shapes with the pure joy of living here, and the magic and wonderment of childhood I hope never to lose.”

“Pam has truly captured the spirit of Enid in this piece,” Jarrett said. “The arts community is a vital part of Enid’s renaissance, and Pam used her unique style to present Enid in a piece of art that we are very proud to show off to the community and to our visitors.”

People coming by Enid Welcome Center today will receive a free postcard displaying Gilbreath’s portrait, which will remain on display at the center. The postcards will join the lineup of Enid items available for sale at Souvenir Station inside the center, including blankets, license plates, tumblers, T-shirts and caps.
