House fire investigated

ENID, Okla. — The cause of a midday fire on South Tyler remains under investigation.

Fire Marshal Ken Helms said the cause of 12:01 p.m. fire at 214 S. Tyler has not been determined and might not be unless someone comes forward with some information.

A column of black smoke rose above the vacant home just as many downtown workers were going to lunch.

Helms said the occupants of the home had moved out a couple of weeks ago and the structure was not secured at the time of the fire. The home had no utilities, electric or natural gas, and there were no signs of another ignition source, such as a meth lab, or that the fire was intentionally set.

“Some neighbors said they’d seen people going in and out of the place scavenging,” Helms said. “Various people had been in an out of the house to scavenge.

“Unless someone comes forward with some information, it remains under investigation.”

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Enid Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office at (580) 234-0541.
