Cheerleading Coach of the Year: Enid High’s Chard named by Oklahoma Coaches Assoc.

ENID, Okla. — Karie Chard, Enid High School cheerleading coach, has been named Cheerleading Coach of the Year by the Oklahoma Coaches Association.

Chard, whose husband Steve is EHS football coach, has been coaching cheerleading for 24 years — since she was a college student.

Karie Chard also is state director for Universal Cheerleaders Association, a cheerleading camp and competition company.

“I’m very honored and humbled,” Chard said. “I’m also very thankful to Butch Lingenfelter, who nominated me at the meeting.”

Milt Bassett, executive director of Oklahoma Coaches Association, said coaches of the year are selected by vote of the association’s board of directors, after taking nominations from each of the eight state regions.

“Each region board member gets up and goes over the resumé, and after all eight of the board members make their presentations, they pass the ballot and vote,” Bassett said.

Bassett, who has known Chard for several years, was pleased to see her selection.

“She’s been the head of the cheerleading coaches association, under our umbrella, for years,” Bassett said. “She’s a great organizer and she’s done a lot of things to help cheerleading coaches in Oklahoma.”

Chard has been cheerleading coach at EHS for one year. Prior to following her husband to Enid because of his own job with EHS, she coached cheerleading at the University of Oklahoma.

“This is the first time we’ve ever been in the same school system together,” Karie Chard said.

Chard said she hopes to grow the EHS spirit program and foster closer ties between the junior high and high school cheerleading and pompon teams.

EHS currently has 17 cheerleaders and 17 on the pompon squad.

“For Enid being a large school there was not a lot of participation,” Chard said. “We haven’t had enough cheer participants to have anyone cheer in junior varsity games.”

Laverne High School football coach Tim Allen was named OCA Football Coach of the Year.
