Monsters and more monsters the theme for drawing contest

ENID, Okla. — Winners have been selected in this year’s Fourth Grade Leonardo da Vinci Monster Drawing Contest at Park Avenue Thrift, and the winning artists will receive their gift certificates Saturday.

This year’s contest drew 466 entries from students in 23 Enid classrooms. Winning entries will remain on display in the Emerging Artists Gallery at Park Avenue Thrift through Nov. 7.

Children drew alien monsters, flying monsters, rolling monsters and creepy-crawly monsters.

Traci Layton, a certified art educator, judged this year’s contest. Layton studied at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and is a published photographer and writer.

The Best of Show Award will go to Beatrice Maira Villanueva, a student at Garfield Elementary School. Beatrice wins a $25 gift certificate and her classroom wins $200.

“Wow! Wonderful use of mixed media,” Layton wrote. “Your picture has it all: movement, texture, proportion, composition, color and even glitter! This is really neat! Jeepers, creepers, where’d you get those peepers.”

Winners are selected in each of the four monster categories. First-place winners will be given $20 gift certificates, second-place winners will get $15 gift certificates, third-place winners will be given $10 gift certificates and honorable mention artists will get $5 gift certificates. The winners’ classrooms get $200 for Best of Show, $100 for first, second or third, and $50 for honorable mention. All together, more than $3,000 in cash and gift certificates will be given away Saturday.

The awards ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Park Avenue Thrift, 507 S. Grand. Refreshments will be served.

The next contest, slated for November, will be for fifth-grade students in Enid Public Schools.
