Fire burns building packed with ammo

ENID, Okla. — An electrical problem was the most likely cause of a fire early Tuesday morning on East Market, an official said.

Fire Marshal Ken Helms said when firefighters arrived at the 7:20 a.m. reported fire at 4414 E. Market, the structure was fully involved in flames.

The fire was in a detached building on the property being used as a gun shop, where the machinist owner would work on guns and reload ammunition, Helms said.

“It was making quite a racket when we arrived,” he said. “He (the property owner) met us at the street and told us there were all kinds of guns and ammunition in there.”

Helms said firefighters had to fight the fire defensively, from a distance, with large-diameter hoses. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, but the structure was a total loss.

He said no official cause had been determined, but because of what the property owner told investigators, it most likely was an electrical item that caused the fire.

“The only heat sources were electrical items,” Helms said.
