ENID, Okla. —
If you’re looking for a Memorial Day decoration, Enid Senior Center has some.
Margy Weldon, coordinator of Enid Senior Center, said the project has been done for about 15 years as a fundraiser for the center.
“This is our only fundraiser of the year,” Weldon said.
Weldon hopes the center will make between $1,500 and $2,000 this year with the decorations. Last year’s total was about $1,600. She asked those interested to call Enid Senior Center, 202 W. Walnut, at 234-2806. Flower arrangements sell for between $5 and $20. Special arrangements also will be made by request.
The arrangements use different types of artificial flowers, but she said patriotic arrangements also are available. Weldon said each year they make a number of red, white and blue arrangements, some using American flags as part of the arrangement. Each year, they make about 300 arrangements that are displayed in the senior center. There are about 50 already made, and volunteer Betty Walters works two or three mornings a week to make them, with Weldon assisting.
The project started because additional funds were needed for projects around the center, Weldon said. The funds go for upkeep and supplies. Walters has been working on the project for 13 years, making the arrangements by hand. Originally, there was a group of people who helped, but most have died or moved away, Walters said.
As the displays increase, more tables will be set up for display of the arrangements.
“It’s a lot of work but we enjoy it,” Weldon said. “We’ll make anything the customer wants.”
