ENID, Okla. — The city of Enid website is one of eight Vision Internet clients nationwide to receive a 2013 Sunny Award, which honors the most transparent government websites in the nation.

Vision Internet, a national leader in government website development headquartered in Santa Monica, Calif., made the announcement.

The Enid website was one of five Vision Internet clients that received an A-plus grade.

The fourth annual Sunny Awards were sponsored by Sunshine Review, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to government transparency.

“The city of Enid is pleased to receive this recognition. We strive to provide the best in services to our great community,” said Steve Kime, director of public relations and marketing. “Under the leadership of City Manager Eric Benson and with the expertise of Derrick Silas, our director of e-communication and our information technology team, we view our website as an important tool to assist our citizens.

“Our goal is always to be accessible, visible and transparent to our community, and our state-of-the-art website provides an avenue for all citizens to access our services.”

For the 2013 awards, Sunshine Review editors analyzed more than 1,000 qualifying government websites and graded each on a 10-point transparency checklist. Editors looked at content available on government websites against what should be provided. They sought information on items such as budgets, meetings, lobbying, financial audits, contracts, academic performance, public records and taxes. Since its inception in 2008, Sunshine Review has analyzed the websites of all 50 states and more than 7,000 state and local entities.

“Forward-thinking cities and counties across North America are embracing new, tech-savvy ways to proactively share public information that empowers citizens and keeps government accountable to the people,” said Steve Chapin, president of Vision Internet. “Vision Internet prides itself on taking the latest private sector technology available and bringing it to local government in a way that makes sense for public agencies. Transparency is a big part of that effort, and we’re proud to be associated with the cities and counties recognized by the Sunshine Review.”

A key to Vision Internet’s innovative website functionality is its new government content management system, visionCMS, which allows non-technical staff to add, edit and delete website content while providing the management tools necessary to maintain control, consistency and quality.

The Sunny Awards announcement was made during the annual Sunshine Week, March 10-16, a period nationally recognized by hundreds of media and civic organizations that celebrates the efforts of activists and the strides taken toward open government.
