The flying training squadrons at Vance Air Force Base are divided into various flights of students, each of which is identified with a letter.
Each letter is assigned an identifying word, like Ocho, for O Flight, Llama, for L Flight or Mike for M Flight.
For the 3rd Flying Training Squadron, N Flight is better known as Nacho Flight, and nachos have become a weekly tradition in their flight room.
Every Friday is Nacho Friday in N Flight, with the students doing their best to concoct delectable nacho recipes to impress their flight instructors.
“They don’t just make chips and cheese,” said 1st Lt. Michelle Bosch, an N Flight instructor pilot. “These have to be gourmet nachos. Some classes just make chips and cheese, but those are never our favorite classes.”
Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Class 13-13 is not one to settle for a mundane offering.
“This class takes the most pride in making nachos that I’ve ever seen a class take,” Bosch said, “which is winning a lot of instructors on their side because there’s really good nachos every Friday at noon.”
Their drive to produce memorable nachos every week, said Bosch, is indicative of 13-13’s work ethic.
“It just kind of indicates their attitude,” she said. “They always want to strive to do things above and beyond. They’re doing very well. They’re pretty fun.”
All of Class 13-13’s T-1 students are in Nacho Flight, but 2nd Lt. Jonathan Payne is the main man when it comes to nachos.
“I am the nacho officer, I guess,” he said. “They asked for volunteers in the beginning, and I like to cook.”
Some of Payne’s specialties have been sausage and chicken, bacon, ranch nachos. This past Friday’s offering was barbecue pulled pork with jalapeno pepper jack cheese.
“It’s something different, other than chips and cheese,” he said. “You’ve got to make it special.”
Some other flights have traditions, like Ocho Flight, which makes a daily batch of jalapeno popcorn, a staple in Combat Air Force flight rooms. Mike Flight used to have Milk Shake Mondays, but that only lasted about six months.ｷ
