Returns to Enid: Classical guitarist Edgar Cruz holds Tri-State clinic

ENID, Okla. — Classical guitarist Edgar Cruz gave a guitar clinic and a concert Friday as part of Tri-State Music Festival.

Cruz, an Oklahoma native, has been named the Oklahoma Gazette’s “Oklahoma’s Top Performing Artist” and “Oklahoma’s Top Acoustic Guitarist” more than 15 times.

Cruz said Friday was his first public appearance in Enid in about two years. His 2006 appearance with Enid Symphony Orchestra was one of his biggest shows, Cruz said.

“Enid’s always been one of my biggest cities in Oklahoma,” Cruz said.

His guitar clinic was for students and more than 50 turned out to learn.

“I’m going to accept any student who wants to learn anything more about playing an acoustic guitar,” Cruz said before his appearance.

During the evening concert, Cruz performed a mix of his popular favorites, including “Malaguena,” “Classical Gas,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “In the Mood,” “Dueling Banjos” and “Hotel California,” and songs from his latest album, “Oklahoma Guitar.”

Cruz’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” garnered nearly 15 million hits on YouTube.

One song, “Ode to Michael Hedges,” has an Enid connection. Hedges was an Enid native.

“He was one of the greatest acoustic guitar players in the world,” Cruz said. “He changed the way a lot of people play. Michael was born in Enid way back when, and he died in a car wreck in the 1990s. I wrote this song in honor of him.”

Hedges also was known for playing a harp guitar, which has an extra neck with bass strings on it.

“I’m going to be playing it on harp guitar,” Cruz said.

Cruz said it’s hard to pin down a genre as “his favorite.”

“To be honest, anything with passion and energy is what I like to play,” Cruz said. “I play all the genres.”

Tri-State Music Festival concludes today with the parade, featuring 21 bands, at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Grand Concert at 3 p.m. in Enid High School auditorium.
