OSBI: Birchfield aimed shotgun at police after threatening to kill woman

ENID, Okla. — A man shot Saturday night by an Enid police officer had threatened to kill a woman and aimed a shotgun at police before being killed, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Police received a call about 7 p.m. from a woman living at 1301 N. Central stating Jimmie Wayne Birchfield was threatening to shoot her, according to an OSBI. When officers arrived, the woman came out of the home. Shortly after, Birchfield, 36, approached the doorway of the front door and aimed a shotgun outside.

One officer fired his weapon, striking Birchfield in the chest. Emergency responders transported Birchfield to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Enid Police Department called OSBI to the scene about 7:45 p.m., and agents spent several hours interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.

Once the OSBI report is complete, the OSBI case agent will provide the district attorney with a copy. The DA will determine if the shooting was justified.

An EPD press release stated the officer involved in the shooting was placed on routine administrative leave. The name of the officer has not yet been released.
