City awarded AETC Community Support Award

ENID, Okla. — The city of Enid has been awarded the 2014 Air Education and Training Command Community Support Award, AETC officials announced this morning.

The city has been recognized for its support of Vance Air Force Base, which has been part of the Enid community since 1941.

The award, known as the Altus Trophy, is given annually to the community judged to show the best support for its nearby AETC base or unit.

“This is in recognition of the great community support and relationship Enid and Vance have,” said Mike Cooper, city of Enid military liaison. “This is a very prestigious award.”

The award was developed by the Altus Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee and then-AETC commander Gen. Edward A. Rice. The winner is chosen by a panel of retired Air Force generals, Cooper said.

This is the first time Enid has received the award, which was first presented in 2011. Columbus, Miss., won the first award, followed by Wichita Falls, Texas, in 2012 and Del Rio, Texas, last year.
