It was 4-H Day at the mall

By noon Saturday, 23 4-H’ers from the Northwest District had registered as participants in the 29th annual 4-H Day at Oakwood Mall.

Calen and Cody Mayer, brothers and members of the Fairview 4-H club, were manning the registration table. Many more registrants were to follow throughout the day, Calen said.

The daylong event offered informative displays on woodworking, electricity, safety, care of animals, environmental awareness, clothing, foods, leisure arts, computers, fitness and photography. It also featured a speech contest, talent shows and fashion shows.

Down the mall from the talent and fashion shows, Diana Shipley, a Crescent seventh-grader, answered questions and presented information on dairy cattle and goats. She and her sister, Kasey Shipley, have 12 cattle and two goats as 4-H projects.

Attendance numbers were higher than in the past.

“We’re a little more up this year from last year,” said Jim Rhodes, Northwest District 4-H Youth Development Program specialist. “We’re also a little more condensed.”

Blair Peoples, a Vici High School junior, performed two songs in the talent show.

“I sang, ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky,’ and a duet, ‘Can’t Stop Singing,’ with Austin Ladd,” Blair said.

Later, Blair showcased her sewing skills by modeling the wool outfit that took second place in the state in the “Make It Yourself With Wool” contest.

Her ensemble consists of a burnt orange vest with plaid collar; camel slacks with side zipper, darts and yoke; and a navy blouse with bronze squares on the lapel that brought out the blue in the jacket lapels.

This is the sixth year Blair has competed in the Make It Yourself With Wool contest, said her mother, Donna Peoples.

Blair also gave a speech on conservation and keeping Oklahoma beautiful.
