Enid housing study out this week

ENID, Okla. — By Thursday, Enid officials will have a much clearer picture of the local housing market.

Houston-based CDS Market Research has wrapped up a weeks-long study of economic data and will present their findings during Enid Regional Developmental Authority’s annual meeting Thursday.

The annual meeting is 11:30 a.m. at Oakwood Country Club.

CDS President Steve Spillette will keynote the meeting and present some data from their study.

“He will be presenting those findings, statistically backing up what we already knew — that we are tight on housing in Enid,” said ERDA Executive Director Brent Kisling. “Through his study, we’ll be able to better identify a plan moving forward to solve that problem.”

Earlier this year, Kisling said Enid was at a “choke point” between lack of housing and a growing business climate. The problem arises, he said, when there aren’t enough housing options for new workers moving to town. Therefore, the belief goes, economic growth stagnates.

Kisling said this study will provide statistics for the public to understand the situation — specifically, for those who need a reason to build here.

“We’ve got to convince builders to build more houses. We’ve got to convince more contractors to come to this area to help those builders. And we’ve got to convince financial institutions to loan money out,” he said.

“All of those entities require some kind of statistical information to back up the risk they would put into a project. Any time you build a house, there’s going to be capital at risk and you want some kind of statistical backing for making that risk.”

During the luncheon and annual meeting, ERDA will dispose of a few business items and release its annual report.

Those wanting to attend the luncheon should register soon, so ERDA will know how many seats and meals to plan. Member entities can attend for no charge, and non-members can pay $15 to attend the meeting.
