Fowler named OSSBA president

ENID, Okla. — Willa Jo Fowler became president of Oklahoma State School Boards Association during the recent annual conference. She will serve one year in office.

Fowler has been on Enid Public Schools Board of Education since 1975. She was president of Enid school board numerous times.

Fowler also has been on OSSBA Board of Directors since 1989, representing District 3, which includes Garfield, Grant, Kay, Noble, Pawnee and Payne counties. Fowler has chaired the Government Relations Committee many times through those years.

“I worked with our legislators, our senators and representatives in D.C. concerning our public schools,” Fowler said.

Fowler said education has been an important part of her life since she was young, with being a student, teacher or school board member — sometimes two at the same time. She and her husband, Corky, have two children and four grandchildren. She is active with her church, enjoys reading and playing bridge.

Locally, Fowler serves on the boards of Smart Start, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Metropolitan Area Human Services Commission.

She has been given many awards, including Garfield County Child Friendly Lifetime Achievement Award, March of Dimes Women of Achievement in Education, Enid Education Association Friend of Education, Phillips University Distinguished Alumna, Enid Public Schools Foundation Hall of Fame, Advocate for Children from Early Childhood Association, Kingfisher High School of Fame, OSSBA All State School Board and OSSBA Distinguished Service Award. She was a finalist for the Enid News & Eagle’s Pillar of the Plains award.

“Willa Jo will provide excellent leadership for our Board of Directors and school boards statewide,” said Jeff Mills, OSSBA executive director.

“I am honored to serve the Oklahoma State School Boards Association as their president for the coming year and look forward to not only representing my local board, but all boards of education that are members of the OSSBA,” Fowler said.

OSSBA was created in 1944 to provide support for local school board members with a variety of information, assistance, and representation services. The organization represents the interests of public school boards before the legislature, provides training programs for school board members, provides school system services, and provides to individual school board member a variety of other services and information to improve the quality of educational leadership for each school district in Oklahoma.
