Benefit to help raise hunger awareness

ENID, Okla. — Southard House Bed and Breakfast Inn and Loaves and Fishes of NW Oklahoma are teaming up to raise awareness of Hunger Action Month and to raise funds to help feed local families in need.

Southard House Bed and Breakfast Inn will host a benefit breakfast 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday, with all monetary proceeds going to benefit the Loaves and Fishes food pantry. The breakfast will be come-and-go, by-donation at Southard House, 518 W. Pine in the Kenwood Historic District.

Loaves and Fishes Executive Director Carrie Sanders said the Southard House benefit breakfast will serve both to raise funds for the food pantry and to highlight Hunger Action Month and food insecurity issues in the community.

“Hunger Action Month is a time to bring about awareness to the issues related to food insecurity,” Sanders said. “We always seem to talk about the starving kids in Africa, but what many people don’t realize is that some of their neighbors here in Enid are struggling with food insecurity every day.”

Sanders said events such as the Southard House benefit breakfast are important in raising funds to help locals overcome food insecurity.

“We are a true nonprofit, relying completely on private donations, and every little bit helps,” Sanders said.

The need for public support has continued to increase with demand for food programs in the community.

According to a 2011 Feeding America study, an estimated 8,420 people in Garfield County — more than 14 percent of the population — struggle with food insecurity on a daily basis.

Sanders said demand for services at Loaves and Fishes has grown since the pantry opened its doors last October, and now more than 600 households are served in the pantry each month. Sanders said about 25 percent of all people served each month are new clients, representing a continued increase in the pantry’s services.

Sanders said she is grateful for Southard House’s efforts to support Loaves and Fishes in meeting that increased need.

“We are so appreciative of Southard House for hosting this event in conjunction with Hunger Action Month,” Sanders said. “Loaves and Fishes is a local nonprofit and we love partnering with other local businesses in efforts to help our neighbors. It’s a great example of community dollars helping people in this community.”

Southard House Bed and Breakfast Inn co-owner Tammy Neal said the benefit breakfast seemed a natural way for the inn to help feed hungry neighbors.

“At Southard House a full, hot breakfast is an incredibly important part of our guests’ experience,” Neal said. “It seems fitting for us to use that experience to help support Loaves & Fishes and feed neighbors who are having trouble putting food on the table. We have been truly blessed, and we want to use those blessings to help others.”

Neal said the benefit event will feature a full breakfast, including maple walnut French toast bake, sausage and egg casserole, homemade pumpkin bread, coffee and juice. The morning also will feature tours of the inn and a drawing for one of the attendees to receive a free night’s stay at Southard House.
