Third generation: A.W. Brueggemann Co. celebrates 85 years in Enid as machine shop

ENID, Okla. — In 1928, Art Brueggemann moved from Covington to Enid and started a machine shop.

Today, 85 years later, that shop still is operated by the third generation of the Brueggemann family.

Jennefer Branch, granddaughter of A.W. Brueggemann, said the company held its anniversary Thursday to celebrate its customers and the community which has supported them.

The machine shop still is in operation making precision bearings, but the company also sells tools and has established an art gallery, where it designs and cuts out metal logos.

Parts are centrifugally cast and individually inspected with certified measuring instruments. Brueggemann also provides a full range of services, including general machining and custom engineering. The company recently designed a camera guide for Luckinbill Co., Branch said.

Chris Freeman, manager of the art gallery, personally designs and cuts all of the logos from metal plates.

The first location for the company was across the street from its current location at 412 N. Independence.

The business passed to Art’s son, Warren, then to his granddaughter, Jennefer, and to Mike, Geoffrey and Warren Brueggemann Jr. Only Jennefer still is active in the business. During the 1930s and 1940s, oil field businesses often were handicapped by the length of time it took to replace worn-out bearings. Art Brueggemann had the equipment necessary, and a number of oil field companies contacted Art’s Machine Shop, the original name of the business. At their request, he entered the bearing business.

In 1979, the name was changed to A.W. Brueggemann Co., to honor the founder, Branch said.

Branch said the business has been locally owned since its inception. She said it will never sell and will remain in Enid.
