Make-A-Burger draws a crowd for Make-A-Wish

ENID, Okla. — Saturday’s gusty winds made for challenges with grilling and serving, but the burgers at Make-A-Burger for Make-A-Wish were just as tasty and the crowd came out in force to enjoy them anyway.

The event raised about $10,000, with ticket sales for people to sample burgers made by contestants, said Penny Holloway, local sales manager for KOFM, which coordinated the fundraiser.

“We were really pleased with it,” Holloway said. “We had to close early because we ran out of burgers. Between 1:30 and 2, we stopped selling tickets.”

It had been scheduled to last until 3 p.m.

Papa Murphy’s took first place with Papa’s Favorite Pizza Burgers cooked up by Michael Flach, the owner of Papa Murphy’s in Enid. The burgers were served on a pizza crust bun with cheese, pepperoni and marinara sauce.

Holloway said Flach told KOFM he would deduct his expenses from the $1,000 cash prize and donate the remainder back to Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Hope Outreach took second place with Italian-inspired Parmesan burgers. The ground beef and sausage patties were spread with a Parmesan spread and served with grilled onion and mozzarella cheese on onion and poppy seed ciabatta bread.

“We wanted to do this because Make-A-Wish is a good cause,” Executive Director Matt Lohman said.

Curttright Honda came in third place with bruschetta burgers, also served on ciabatta bread. Beside the burgers, the Curttright team served homemade lemon cookies.

The People’s Choice award went to Crappy burgers, cooked up by Gerald Craparotta, owner of Crappy’s Warehouse. The recipe is tried and true.

“I serve them at my nightclub,” Craparotta said.

The secret ingredients are barbecue sauce, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke and Nature’s Seasoning.

The event brought out 11 contestants eager to flex their “grilling know-how” to help raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation. Others included Enid Civitan Club, The Branders, The Commons, Bald Guys’ Burgers by Wings To Go, Albion Smokers, Advantage Burger Burners by Advantage Residential Contracting Services and The Rising 4, a service organization made up of junior enlisted personnel at Vance Air Force Base.
