Fire department still is looking for 2 firefighters

ENID, Okla. — Enid Fire Department still is seeking a few good men and women.

The department will continue to take applications for the position of firefighter until 5 p.m. June 20.

Fire Marshal Ken Helms said there are two positions open, but the department can create an eligible hire list from applicants that remains viable for two years.

The last application process produced 21 eligible candidates, but about 80 people applied for the position.

Firefighters are required to perform fire suppression duties, such as combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; responding to emergency medical and hazardous materials incidents; and working in 24-hour shifts. Starting pay is $11.27 an hour. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, merit pay and medical/dental insurance.

Candidates must pass a physical agility screening in one of three chances. Those who pass the physical agility testing will attend a mandatory applicant orientation meeting 2 p.m. June 29.

Applicants who pass the physical agility will undergo a background check. The Fire Civil Service Commission will review applications, candidate biographies and background checks and accept or reject the applications.

Applicants selected by the commission will be notified of their status and scheduled for written exams and oral interviews administered and scored by the Civil Service Commission.

Helms said he plans to make conditional offers of hiring to two applicants and create a viable hiring list by Aug. 3.

Those hired after testing will have a one-year conditional probation, where the firefighter must obtain his or her EMT basic certification and complete other training required by the department.

Helms said the requirements of the hiring process ensure the department has the best candidates possible.

“We feel like it’s important to screen our applicants thoroughly to ensure we’re finding the right individuals to serve the needs of the community,” he said.

Interested applicants can apply online by going to www.enid.org/employment beginning Sunday. Applicants for firefighter must be between the ages of 18 and 45, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or G.E.D. and must not be a current user of controlled substances.
